Green hydrogen is essential for achieving a climate-neutral future, and DEKRA is your trusted partner in navigating this transformation. With nearly 100 years of experience, we continue to lead the way in ensuring safety and sustainability across industries. Discover how DEKRA's innovative solutions are driving the future of a sustainable hydrogen economy.

How Green Hydrogen Is Produced

Green hydrogen is produced through electrolysis, utilizing renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. This process is entirely emissions-free, making green hydrogen a cornerstone of a sustainable energy future. While green hydrogen production is currently in the ramp-up phase and associated with high costs, it is expected to be competitively priced by 2030.

Key Applications of Green Hydrogen

Green hydrogen is not just a solution for a sustainable energy future; it's a versatile resource transforming multiple industries. Let's explore its key applications and how DEKRA is ensuring safety and efficiency at every stage.

Industrial Decarbonization

Green hydrogen is critical in reducing emissions in energy-intensive sectors like steel, ammonia, and methanol production, as well as for emission-free process heat in industries such as paper and glass production.

Sustainable Mobility

Hydrogen fuels next-generation vehicles, supporting zero-emission transportation.

Energy Storage

As a versatile energy carrier, green hydrogen plays a crucial role in balancing renewable energy supply and demand.

“As a testing, inspection, and certification company, we are responsible for ensuring the safe transition to a hydrogen-based economy.”

Explore Our Pioneering Project With Hylane

Hylane, a startup founded in 2021, is leading the decarbonization of heavy goods transportation with its hydrogen-powered truck rental service. In partnership with DEKRA, Hylane provides a full-service package including maintenance, driver training, and safety inspections. Customers pay only for kilometers driven, minimizing investment risks. With 42 trucks already operational, Hylane is paving the way for a greener future, supported by DEKRA’s expertise throughout the vehicle lifecycle.

“Hydrogen trucks can deliver impressive practical benefits.”

Certification of Green Hydrogen

As a trusted testing, inspection, and certification company, DEKRA is committed to ensuring a safe transition to a hydrogen-based economy. We are actively working to be one of the first TIC companies to offer EU-recognized green hydrogen certificates. Beyond certification, DEKRA is dedicated to promoting greater acceptance of green hydrogen applications across society, industry, and politics.

Hydrogen Economy in Numbers

20 Million Tons

of renewable hydrogen will be produced or imported into the EU by 2030 according to REPowerEU targets.

9,700 Kilometers

of hydrogen pipelines are planned alone in Germany’s core network by 2032. About 60% of the total length will involve the repurposing of existing natural gas pipelines.

42%

of the hydrogen used in industry in Europe in 2030 must be renewable. These are mandatory usage targets of the Renewable Energy Directive set by the European Council in 2023.

Ensuring a Safe Transition to a Hydrogen Economy: DEKRA's Positioning

For a successful hydrogen economy, applications must gain acceptance in society, industry, and politics. A harmonized regulatory framework is crucial.

DEKRA recommends adapting and harmonizing legal frameworks, such as NRM H2 and ECH2A, and supports the expansion of hydrogen infrastructure. Progress has been made in the certification of green hydrogen, but further developments are needed.
